My whole childhood just changed

Uhhhh, how did I not know this before?

Just listening to Bill Simmons’ podcast with Peter Berg, who directed the new ESPN documentary “Kings Ransom” about Gretzky leaving Edmonton.

Apparently, when the Great One was leaving, he was deciding between Los Angeles and… Detroit. His wife told him to go to Detroit. He chose Los Angeles. He never won another title.

Imagine Wayne coming to the Winged Wheel alongside 23 year old Steve Yzerman. Plus, Steve Chiasson, Gerard Gallant, Probie, Adam Oates… that’s immediately an incredible team. How many more cups do we win? Four, five?

This was happening during a stretch where Wayne won the Hart Trophy nine out of ten years. Insane.

well keep in mind that LA traded 5 future draft picks and two players to get Gretzky, so playing the “what if” game is sorta tough. I have a hard time imagining that there is any way Edmonton trades him to detroit without Yzerman being involved. Still pretty crazy to think about. I didn’t know that either though.

probably would have given up adam oates, another hall of fame type dude who we ended up undervaluing and dealing for the immortal bernie federko.

no way the wings would have dealt yzerman.
