Sign of the times

Via Matt, Michigan is broke:

State Sen. Michelle McManus (R-Lake Leelanau) has canceled her subscription to the Leelanau Enterprise.

The newspaper staff received that word last week from Nikki Bouck, purchasing agent for the Michigan Senate, who sent an email saying that “because of the current State of Michigan budget situation, the Senator does not wish to pay for the subscription at this time.”

Nonetheless, La Duke said, McManus wanted the newspaper staff to know “that she’ll still be reading the paper every (week) at her parents’ house up the road.”

she can afford it. what a cheap ass.

This is not an accurate portrayal of the situation. She isn’t canceling a personal subscription to the paper because of an inability to pay for it herself. Her office is canceling the subscription that is paid for from her office budget.

I can attest, Senate office budgets have taken some major budget cuts. I’m sure Mcmanus could pay for a personal subscription if she still wanted to.

We have canceled some of our subscriptions as well, some of which my boss is now getting at his home instead. I’d much rather we canceled a handful of subscriptions than we all get to take 20 unpaid days off next year, which some of us are doing already anyway.

    20 DAYS OFF????????????????????????????????????????

give me that job. i get 3.

well time off is nice but not involuntary unpaid time off. It’s similar to taking an 8-10 percent pay cut.

Via Matt, maybe the legislators should do some freelance online work while they’re in session. I’m sure they’d make enough to pay the subscriptions:
