The price of cheap

I finally got around to watching a cool video my brother sent me about how Goldman Sachs restricts the pay of Burger King workers while accepting a ten billion dollar bailout from the government and giving huge bonuses to the corporate elite:

The video asks, what would you do with $18,000? (which is theoretically the amount of government booty GS could give to each BK employee.)

The problem is that all the people in the video say they’d do the individually smart thing: use the money to pay off their debt or use it for savings. Which is wonderful, but not stimulative. It’d be better to apply the 18k to stuff that would indirectly reduce the worker’s financial burdens while creating new jobs, like building free daycare centers.

That’s why I feel like if the Government wanted to give people money to spend only in some sort of stimulus bailout, they would have to do it via AMEX giftcards that could be used for purchases only.

If I get a check from the Government for 10 grand, I’m paying off credit card debt, getting ahead on my loans maybe putting out Corey Major’s newest record.

If I get an AMex giftcard from the Government for 10K that I HAVE TO SPEND on things, I’m buying some new furniture, putting out Corey Major’s Newest Record, buying a 30 inch iMac, buying a set of Shun knives, buying a Gibson acoustic guitar and going to Europe for a week or two.

Can you imagine if the government did something to make people stop making payments on all debts for like 6 months? I would love if the Goverment would just bail out all current student loans (which obviously will never happen) but if they could put interest and debts on hold for a few months, I think that people would be able to buy shit….probably…

yeah, if you’re paying over 300 dollars a month to the government in loans, they should just give you a saturn that’s rusting at a dealership somewhere. two birds, one stone!
