“Unchecked barbarism”

The mass privatization of the American military under the Bush administration (and going back further under Clinton) should scare us: these are taxpayer-funded private citizens from countries all over the world who aren’t held to—and often flout—the established standards for conduct in war. The biggest mercenary company, Blackwater, is one of the reasons Iraq is in such bad shape right now. But they might finally be held accountable for the massacre of 17 Iraq civilians in 2007.
